More from the Calico House!

Built in 1910, this little shotgun-style house needed a lot of work when my client bought it. I recently shared the exterior transformation and wanted to share the interior as well.

We kept original character wherever we could, including the beadboard walls, original mineral door knobs and old wood floors, while giving the house a much-needed refresh with a new kitchen and bathroom, color, lighting and plenty of repairs.

My client also took on a remarkable amount of the work himself, which makes this transformation even more impressive. It’s been so much fun watching him bring our plans for this little house to life.

Enjoy the before and afters because the Calico House has come a LONG way!

I ❤️ America’s historic places.

I’ve been drawn to old houses and historic buildings for as long as I can remember, long before I ever imagined I’d have a career that would allow me to work in them.

I’m a proud member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and believe deeply in the importance of protecting the places that tell our collective story. The architecture, craftsmanship, history, and stories held within old buildings are irreplaceable and worth preserving for generations to come.

Naturally, my National Trust tote and my well-loved copy of A Field Guide to American Houses came along for a day spent exploring Charleston’s historic streets🤓

The Calico House!

Named for the main body color, Sherwin-Williams Calico, this little Easton shotgun-style house got quite the transformation. We traded the yellow exterior for a soft teal, added coral to the front door and porch posts, and brought in new details that give the house so much more character.

My favorite detail is the porch railings. My client made the handsawn balusters himself, and we chose a pattern seen on many homes throughout the Eastern Shore. It feels right at home on this sweet little house.

Swipe to see where we started. The before and after is pretty remarkable!

(Side note: the AI content label is due to me removing the power lines. That sunset is 100% real thanks to my client taking the picture at the perfect time)

This historic Annapolis home, built in 1885, was in pretty rough shape when my clients purchased it, and I am so glad they reached out for a color consultation. Adding moulding, paint, wallpaper, and new lighting has completely transformed the space.

Some people may shudder at painting wood cabinets. However, in this case, adding color helped balance the countertop and the handmade backsplash tile while saving my clients tens of thousands of dollars.

This project is a great reminder that color choices (and placement!) can completely change how a space feels, often without a full renovation.

Lucky Lane got a glow up! ✨

Built in 1790, this historic Ellicott City storefront deserved a color palette that felt just as special as the shop inside. The previous colors felt a bit heavy and didn’t reflect the cheerful, welcoming energy that makes Lucky Lane such a joy to visit.

Working within the Historic District guidelines, we selected a new approved palette that brings fresh life to the facade while respecting the building’s long history.

If you’re local, stop by and see it in person. And if you’re not nearby, you’re in luck, there’s an online shop, too🍀

The 151st Preakness Stakes are being held this weekend here in Maryland, so I thought it was the perfect time to share some artwork my clients purchased from Baltimore artist Sandi Wilson 🏇

These encaustic pieces are made from damar resin and beeswax, which feels especially fitting since my client is a beekeeper 🤍🐝

The cobbler has the worst shoes… am I right? 😉

This staircase has truly been a labor of love (just look at that 2021 before photo). We finished the staircase and dining room in 2023, and now it’s finally time for the finishing touches: a runner and stair rods.

We’ve narrowed it down to two plaid patterns and @floors_etc is coming to measure next week. Thanks for your help, @katienohebyrd !

This wall used to feel short and underutilized.

By adding full-height millwork, the room gained vertical presence and much-needed storage. Deep drawers hide office essentials, while the tall shelves above make room for books, records, and a few favorite objects. Including a marionette from Burma🗺️

After years of patiently waiting for the neighboring unit to come on the market, my clients finally had the opportunity to bring their vision to life by combining two condos into one cohesive home in downtown Annapolis.

Working alongside the talented team @winthorpedesignbuild who managed the full renovation, we focused on creating a seamless connection between the spaces so it feels as though it was always meant to be one residence. I collaborated closely with the clients to select the vast majority of the finishes throughout, shaping a home that’s ready to welcome friends and family.

So grateful to have been part of this transformation from two separate units into one beautifully unified space.

This week is Self Portrait week for #52weeksofhome, so it felt like the right time to reintroduce myself and celebrate Gillie Cavan’s three-year anniversary.

I’m Erin (no worries if you thought my name was Gillie) and ever since I was a kid, I’ve been fascinated by houses and buildings. I played with a dollhouse that had no dolls, and I still remember learning about castles in fourth grade. It was probably the first time I had ever looked at a floor plan. Forever grateful to Mrs. Kitzmiller! 🤓

That curiosity naturally turned into a career in interior design. The work is definitely not easy, and it’s far more than shopping for pretty things, but I’m incredibly grateful this is what I get to do every day.

Whether I’m helping a client choose the right paint colors, rethinking an exterior, or designing a kitchen or bathroom that truly functions for the way they live, the goal is always the same: creating homes that feel thoughtful, personal, and meant to be lived in.

Thank you for being here, and thank you to the clients who have trusted Gillie Cavan Color & Design over the past three years. I’m so grateful for every project, near and far, and excited for what’s ahead. Photo credit: @mej.photography

For this project, the living room had already been completed, and the wallpaper for the dining room had been sourced and hung. Where my client was stuck was finding a trim color to pair with the wallpaper.

I’m loving this view. I’m also really glad my client felt confident enough to paint the ceiling a lighter version of the trim!

After six months off its hinges, our bathroom door is finally back where it belongs. The door is original to our 102 year old house, (likely Douglas Fir) and the brass hardware is also original. After the door was stripped, my husband applied several coats of shellac, and then put his Marine training to good use. Turns out no one polishes brass quite like a Marine ✨

This downtown Annapolis home was built sometime between 1840 and 1850, though I suspect it may be earlier based off of the architecture and the fact that the records are a little hazy.

We recently gave it a fresh coat of paint in the color Revolutionary Storm, a name that nods to an earlier era but feels right at home on a house of this style. Annapolis played an important role in the Revolution as the nation’s capital in 1783 and the site where George Washington resigned his commission, which makes the color especially fitting here.

In true Federal fashion, the siding, trim, and windows were all painted the same color for a clean, unified look.

Harbour Design guided the layout of this kitchen and provided the renderings that helped us visualize the final space. With Harry’s expertise and detailed planning, we were able to address more than just removing a wall. HVAC had to be rerouted and new chases were built to accommodate ductwork. Those chases slightly reduced the footprint, however there is still plenty of space and storage.

This bedroom has been my client’s primary space for the last 40 years, but the house itself dates back to 1870. What’s been completed: removed wallpaper, repaired the plaster, painted the walls, restored the windows, and replaced the floors with reclaimed, age-appropriate pine. Two closets were added, the radiator got a fresh coat, and now this incredible Afghan rug has found a home thanks to @carpetbeggarsrugs — I swear it reveals a new color every time I look at it!

Still to come: window treatments and two dressers getting a fresh look. My client’s brass bed has been polished and is patiently waiting in the dining room ✨ Grateful to Jay Turner Painting @jayturner_painting, Mike McNeives plaster, and GreenLeaf Construction @greenleafconstruction for their expert work bringing this room to life.

Last but certainly not least on the Capitol Hill House Tour: the guest bedroom, guest bath, and the office — three spaces that reflect just how far and wide their owners have traveled.

The guest room pairs classic William Morris wallpaper with a sharp but somehow calming, blue trim and door color. In the guest bath, we leaned into navy…a fitting nod to my client’s impressive service *in* the Navy.

And then there’s the office, where a salmony coral backdrop sets the stage for treasures from around the world. And we can’t forget a few unforgettable roommates: Stan the skeleton, Marjorie the bear, and Pheasant Phil (holding things down in the guest room).

Proof that your home can be deeply personal and endlessly fun, especially when you’ve got stories and souvenirs from every corner of the globe!
